Dolls FAQs
Who invented the Barbie doll?
This doll was the invention of a woman named Ruth Handler. She was an American business woman, married to a man named Elliot Handler. Her husband and another man named Harold "Matt" Matson were the co-founders of the Mattel toy company.
What were the inspirations behind the creation of Barbie?
Ruth Handler noticed that her daughter, Barbara, loved giving her doll adult roles. However, most of the dolls designed for children at that time were made to represent infants. She suggested the idea to her husband, the co-founder of the Mattel toy company. Neither he nor the directors of the company were enthused. However, on a trip to Germany, Ruth discovered the adult-figured German doll Bild Lilli. She purchased three and showed them to Mattel upon her return to the United States. The popularity of the doll in Germany encouraged the company to allow her to develop her idea.
What are the oldest known paper dolls in history?
These were the figures which resulted from the Japanese art of folding paper, known as Origami. They date back to the year 800. Little shapes of the Kimono garment were folded and used for various rituals and ceremonies.
What are bisque dolls?
These figures utilize unglazed porcelain, known as "bisque," in their design. This material was commonly used in the creation of doll heads starting in the late 1800s and spanning into the early 1900s. Generally, only the head was created with this material. However, sometimes the half or all of the limbs may have been created with it. Even less likely was the usage of bisque to create the full body. Such all-bisque dolls are very treasured as a result.
