Doll Houses
Doll houses are designed to be toy homes. Miniature homes are known to have existed for thousands of years. The oldest known ones are those of ancient Egypt. These have been found within pyramids and were likely made for religious purposes. They included servants, boats, pets, and livestock.
The doll houses more widely recognized today are of European descent. These originated as "baby houses" in the sixteenth century. Their ornate designs were for the pleasure of adults as opposed to children. Only the wealthy could afford them. Often, they were so detailed that they ended up worth the price of a real house.
These early doll houses were unique. This is because they had to be constructed by individual craftsmen. Later on, during the Industrial Revolution, the capability for mass producing toys developed. As a result, these miniature homes and their accessories became far more affordable.
